Abstract

This article deals with the evolution of homicide crimes in Brazil and the state of Bahia, as well as the control of prisoners in the prison system. We sought to understand the proportion of inmates in relation to the number of homicides in the time intervals in which the data coincide. The research was carried out in the Bahia prison system between the years of 2013 and 2017. The hypothetical-deductive method associated with quantitative and qualitative research techniques was applied in order to understand the reflexes and extent of the influence that inmates have inside and outside the prison. prison system in Bahia. From the study of the prison units, a preliminary survey of the homicides occurred in Brazil and in Bahia was started. In the same way the evolution of the prison contingent was surveyed over time. As a result of the research, it was verified that the series of homicides in Brazil and Bahia occurred in a similar way (always growing). Although all series have a growing march, the evolution of crimes in Bahia is more pronounced than in Brazil. In relation to the prisoners, the time series was seasonal, contradicting the evolution of the series of lethal crimes. It was also found that prisoners' management in the prison system is divided between the State and the prisoners. With the division of power in the control of the prisoners, it was found that it facilitated the formation of a "criminal society" inside the prisons and that it overflowed to the territories of the cities.
